چکیده

ANATOMICAL STUDIES ON THE MOTION OF THE HEART AND BLOOD. By William Harvey, M.D. With an English Translation and Annotations by Chauncey D. Leake. Charies C. Thomas, Springfield, Ill. and Baltimore, Md. I928. According to the postscript of the author this is the third translation into English of Harvey's work on the circulation of the blood. The first was in I653; the second was that of Robert Willis published in I847. The incentive for this translation is due in part to the tercentenary of the publication of Harvey's work and to the desire to produce a translation free from the stilted language of Willis and more in accord with the present language of physiology. The translator however, acknowledges his great indebtedness to Willis. The illustrations include two portraits of Harvey and a facsimile of Harvey's first notation on the circulation. The first part of the book contains the dedication to Charles the First and also to Dr. Argent and the medical profession and a facsimile of Harvey's work in Latin. The second part consists of Dr. Leake's translation with numerous historical footnotes which add greatly to the reader's interest. One wonders how it is that while generally Harvey's statements are models of terseness and perspicacity, in a number of instances the sentences are involved and the meaning obscure. This translation will undoubtedly prove of value and interest to many readers. H. B. FERRIS.
